Welcome to the website of Shijiazhuang Tedong Valve Manufacturing Co., Ltd.!
Many car owners have been driving for years but do not really understand the engine valve, even though it is one of the core components of the engine, responsible for controlling intake and exhaust. The condition of the valves directly determines whether the vehicle has enough power, whether fuel consumption is economical, and also affects exhaust emissions. Once a valve fails, the repair cost has no fixed standard – it varies greatly depending on the severity of the fault, the vehicle brand and model, and the repair location. Before getting your car repaired, you must distinguish the type of fault to avoid unnecessary expenses.
The mildest valve‑related fault is an aging valve cover gasket that leaks oil. This is not serious and does not require a major engine overhaul – only replacement of the sealing gasket. The part itself is very cheap, costing about 100 RMB, with the main expense being labor, typically 300 to 600 RMB. If you go to a 4S shop, they use original parts with better quality assurance, and the total cost is around 400 to 800 RMB. If you choose a reputable independent repair shop, the labor cost is lower, and the whole job can be done for 300 to 500 RMB, offering better value.
If the vehicle is burning oil, it is most likely due to aged valve stem seals, which then require replacement of the entire set of valve stem seals. An original‑quality seal set costs about 80 to 200 RMB. The parts themselves are not expensive, but the repair requires removing the cylinder head, which is a fairly involved process. Including labor, the total repair cost is generally between 1,500 and 2,000 RMB. During the process of removing the cylinder head, most of the engine oil and coolant will be lost, so it is recommended to replace them at the same time, avoiding separate disassembly later and saving trouble and extra costs.
If the valve body itself has problems, such as wear, deformation, or heat erosion, the entire set of valve components must be replaced. For ordinary family cars, such as Lavida or Bora models, a set of intake and exhaust valve parts costs between 500 and 1,500 RMB, with labor between 800 and 1,200 RMB, for a total repair cost of roughly 2,000 to 3,000 RMB. For vehicles equipped with turbocharged engines like the VW EA888, the cost is much higher. Those valves are made of better materials with higher precision, and a single valve part costs over 350 RMB. Replacing the whole set can easily exceed 4,000 RMB.
Beyond the valve itself, if the valve guides or valve seats also show wear, the repair difficulty increases significantly, falling into the category of moderate engine repair. Such repairs are more complex and time‑consuming, with total costs typically ranging from 4,000 to 7,000 RMB. For some high‑end luxury models, the repair cost can exceed 10,000 RMB. If the fault worsens to the point of needing a full engine overhaul, replacing multiple core components such as valves, pistons, cylinder liners, and the timing system, the overhaul cost for ordinary models is between 5,000 and 10,000 RMB, while for luxury and performance models the cost can rise above 20,000 RMB.
Here is a practical reference: the VW EA211 1.5L naturally aspirated engine has a simple structure and affordable parts. Its valve repair cost is only about half that of the EA888 engine, making daily maintenance and repairs very economical, especially suitable for family use. Finally, here are some repair suggestions. Do not rely solely on engine noise to diagnose valve faults; have a professional shop use diagnostic equipment to accurately identify the problem. When repairing your car, choose a licensed, reputable shop and prioritize original or certified parts. Do not use inferior parts just to save money, as that may cause secondary damage. Regular maintenance and using the correct grade of engine oil can effectively extend valve life and reduce the probability of major repairs.
